What if I don't help?
What if I don't help?

What if I don’t help? The One Body Collaboratives Resource Center receives calls from people of all walks of life. We receive calls from partner churches, hospitals, clinics, schools, rental agencies, health insurance companies, suicide hotlines for veterans and other social service agencies seeking help, support, advice and guidance for assisting individuals or a family in which they make contact.

In the past months One Body Collaboratives has received referrals for individuals and/or families who were in dire need of assistance. Through the telephone intake we discovered a senior and disabled child were residing in a place without electric on the coldest day of the year. We were called about another family where the main caregiver was terminally ill and there was a disabled adult child in the home without a proper support system in place. An older woman was referred to us who was homeless, staying in the lobby of a hotel, without food, or essential medications with “one dollar to her name.” We prayerfully assess each situation before we begin to take action. The parable of the Good Samaritan comes to mind and we asked ourselves, “What if we don’t help?”

It is important to mention we are not an emergency service but some situations warrant emergent attention. Therefore, we call upon those who provide emergency services which, in most communities, are the police, paramedics, adult protective services, DCFS or the Senior Help Line. Remember it is NOT about you investigating the needs of the individual or family it is more about you reporting what you know, suspect or believe to be abuse, neglect or exploitation of children, older adults and those who are disabled.

Call the 24-hour Child Abuse Hotline at 800-25-ABUSE (800-252-2873 or TTY 1-800-358-5117) if you suspect that a child has been harmed or is at risk of being harmed by abuse or neglect. If you believe a child is in immediate danger of harm, call 911 first. https://www.illinois.gov/dcfs/safekids/reporting/Pages/index.aspx
